What tophi are
Tophi are collections of urate crystals that may appear as firm lumps around fingers, toes, elbows, ears, or other tissues. Their appearance varies and another lump should not be assumed to be a tophus.
Do not drain or cut them at home
Skin breakdown, drainage, infection risk, joint damage, or loss of function needs clinical assessment. Long-term urate control can reduce crystal burden, but the timeline and treatment plan are individualized.
